Insights That God would Show Us

Ephesians 1:15-23

This great prayer is one of two in this sacred letter Paul wrote. The prayer in 3:14-21 is for spiritual strength and experience. But this prayer petitions God to give us deeper spiritual insight.

This is probably a circular letter of Paul - not just for the Ephesians but for every church congregation.

He desired them and us to have ...

1. The spirit of wisdom and revelation 1:17

2. To be enlightened in understanding

3. That they may know (oida) three important things

I. What is the HOPE of His Calling 1:18

"One hope of your calling" 4:4

A. We need to realize the hope of personal salvation

What a privilege - many have no hope (2:12)

* Tim's testimony (Taken to Streets, 50)

B. We should rejoice in our hope after death

"... until the redemption of the purchased possession, to the

praise of His glory." (Eph 1:14)

A fine Christian lady who had been extremely poor inherited a fortune and was able to move into a lovely home. She thoroughly enjoyed her comfortable lifestyle. But then she learned that an incurable disease would soon take her life. When she did not express dismay at the prospect of leaving her beautiful new surroundings, her friends were amazed. "How can you be so cheerful about it?" they asked. "Oh, that's easy," she replied. "Just think what's waiting for me-heaven and being with Jesus!"

II. What are the riches of the glory of His

inheritance in the saints 1:18b

A. The riches of His GRACE 2:4-7

B. The riches of CHRIST 3:8

"He became a man that we might become the sons of God. In infancy He troubled a king; in boyhood He puzzled the teachers; in manhood He ruled the course of nature. He walked upon the billows, hushed the sea to sleep, and healed the multitudes without medicine. He never wrote a book; yet the libraries of the world are filled with volumes that have been written about Him. He never penned a musical note; yet He is the theme of more songs than any other subject in the world. Great men have come and gone; yet He lives on. Herod could not kill Him, Satan could not seduce Him, death could not destroy Him, the grave could not hold Him. All others have failed in some way, but not Jesus! This perfect One is altogether lovely."

C. The riches of His GLORY 3:16

Through the Holy Spirit

Moses saw the Glory Exodus 33:18-19, 34:5-7

C. This power is to ...

1. Do our gifts - "of which I became a minister according to the gift of the grace of God given to me by the effective working of His power." (Eph 3:7 NKJV)

3. Stand against satan - "Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil." (6:11)

"Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand." (6:13)

"above all, taking the shield of faith with which you will be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked one." (6:16)
